Generating Economic Benefits for Local Businesses Through QDSinternational Installations

When an interactive art installation takes place in a public space, it does more than just beautify the urban landscape or offer an immersive experience to passersby. It also acts as a powerful economic driver for local businesses. By attracting a steady flow of visitors, these installations naturally increase foot traffic around nearby cafés, restaurants, and shops, thereby stimulating their activity. Day and night, they create an energy that extends visitors’ time in the area and encourages local consumption.
An Economic Boost Driven by Interactive Art
Interactive art installations are not just works to be admired; they create a real economic dynamic by drawing a diverse audience. Whether it’s curious locals or tourists seeking unique experiences, these installations transform urban spaces into attractions that directly benefit surrounding businesses.
-
Increased Foot Traffic: Installing an interactive artwork in a neighborhood results in a noticeable rise in pedestrian activity. Visitors take the time to explore the surroundings, generating a positive impact on nearby businesses.
-
Extended Visitor Stay: Immersive artworks encourage passersby to slow down, engage, and enjoy the atmosphere, increasing the likelihood that they will stop for a coffee, meal, or shopping.
-
Enhanced Tourist Appeal: With strategic communication efforts, these installations can become destinations in themselves, drawing visitors who, in turn, discover local offerings.
-
Opportunities for Entrepreneurs: Events around these installations provide a platform for local artisans, street performers, and other economic players to showcase their products or services.
As part of the Des Moines Performing Arts 2024, the chosen installation to meet these objectives is Impulse. “Impulse will create an engaging destination that can be visited multiple times throughout the month-long installation period,” said Chris Della Vedova, Chair of the Operation Downtown Board of Directors. “We are excited to add vibrancy to Downtown DSM and encourage all to visit local restaurants and retailers while in the area.”

The Impulse art installation is a creation by Lateral Office and CS Design. This artwork draws inspiration from serialism, a technique based on the repetition and variation of musical elements, to create zones of intensity and calm. Impulsion is an invitation to play, laugh, interact, and collectively create an experience of joy and shared moments.
This study highlights the concrete results and positive impacts of its deployment during the Des Moines Performing Arts event in Des Moines, Iowa.
